What are the pros and cons of consumer-driven health care?
Consumer-driven health care often results in a patient being more knowledgeable about their disease. They are active participants in their care. They are educating themselves about their medical condition and trying to understand their options.
A con of consumer-driven health care is that the consumer may not understand how their unique health care situation may be different than those of someone else they know. People often hear stories about medical care and outcomes from those with circumstances different than their own situations. There are many factors that influence how a patient can be treated for a diagnosis beyond the diagnosis of cancer, such as other health issues and complications and the stage of their cancer. Patients’ needs and experiences are not identical. Understanding what an organization can do for your specific needs is very important.

What are your thoughts on the current political climate with regard to the ACA?
The Affordable Care Act has allowed more people in Hawai‘i to have access to health care than in the past. As a result, patients are identifying their cancer early on. Early detection is a key element to overall survival. As for the current political climate with regard to the ACA, it is disturbing to think that some of the good that has come out of the program is currently being jeopardized. We can only hope that before a repeal of the entire program is put into place, there will be serious thought about how to learn from the weaknesses of the current program so the new program will be stronger while still allowing the thousands of people that are currently covered to remain covered.
