What initiative are you most excited about at HVCB?
The Hawai‘i Visitors & Convention Bureau is responsible for developing marketing programs that inspire people to visit Hawai‘i and cherish what makes the Hawaiian Islands special. Since we are also part of the community, we are keenly aware that tourism is woven into the fabric of Hawai‘i’s economy across all of our communities. We wholeheartedly acknowledge this privilege and recognize it as our kuleana to share our home responsibly. I love our Hawai‘i Rooted campaign, which shares authentic stories about what makes Hawai‘i special.
How have visitor demands evolved over the course of your career in hospitality?
I began working in hospitality when visitors were looking to suntan on the beach and indulge in tropical drinks with cute umbrellas in them. Visitor expectations and travel behaviors have changed vastly over the years. Today’s visitor is looking for an experience that provides authentic culture, soft adventure and unique cuisine. They want to meet local people and learn about our culture. They have a better understanding of the importance of preserving the environment and place high value on sustainability initiatives. They want to be responsible visitors and make a positive impact when they travel.
You co-founded the Women in Lodging & Tourism Hawai‘i Chapter. What could more women be doing to advance their careers?
Women need to move out of their comfort zone, believe in their abilities and seize every opportunity that makes sense for them. Women also need to consciously support other women. We are a sisterhood and we can move up without stepping on one another.
Describe your dream vacation.
I’d love to do a solo temple pilgrimage through Japan. I want to meet and engage with the local people, learn their customs and beliefs, mediate and, of course, eat amazing food.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Be a lifelong learner! I’ve embraced that advice ever since. Every moment is a teaching opportunity, and I try to grab every lesson I can. It’s also important to share the lessons we learn, to be a mentee and a mentor and to always practice gratitude.
